On the basis of study of educational and scientific activity of Kyiv Theological Academy the place and role of Byzantine study in the educational programs, in the process of preparation of specialists, exploring work, scientific contacts, in the personal achievements of professors and teachers of Academy and in the works of students of institution are defined in thesis. Research is based on the unpublished and published sources related to Byzantine study in scientific life and educational process of Academy.

Kyiv Theological Academy was founded in 1819 on the base of old centre of the Ukrainian culture – Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and lasted to 1919, when it was closed by bolshevists. Institution became the leading educationally-scientific center of the Orthodox Church on Ukrainian territory. It’s administrative, scientific and educational activity was determined by regulations common for all higher theological institutions of the Russian empire and was carried out under the control of the higher church department of the country and local metropolitan.

Knowledge on history and culture of Byzantium, its theological inheritance were represented by the educational courses of KTA of historic and theological character. In 1910, after the protracted discussions in an academic corporation, its conservative-minded representatives insisted on formation of the special educational-scientific subsection from “Byzantine study” namely “department of history of Greek-Eastern church”. The process of obtaining the knowledge about the history of Byzantium and realization of researches in this industry was provided by the base of Byzantine study literature and sources of library of Academy. The institution published works of the byzantinists of the Russian empire and translations of foreign authors’ works in it’s own printing organ. Cooperation with a scientific world and in particular with the Russian archaeological institute in Constantinople, and also oversea scientific trips of representatives of institution to the former Byzantine territories (the orthodox East) advanced the development of Byzantine study. Work of storing and studying the Byzantine culture was conducted in Church-archaeological and historical and in Church-archaeological museum at Kyiv Theological Academy.

Researches on Byzantine study are represented by works of professors, teachers and students of institution. This direction developed in Academy on the basis of historical and theological sciences. Central place among them was taken by church history. By the means of this science Byzantine study was developed by F.Ternovskyj, M.Hrossu, celibate priest Anatoliy (Hrysyuk), O.Voronov, I.Malyshevskyj. Other historical and theological science within the limits of which Byzantine study researches were carried out – patrology and patristics, represented in institution by the works of К.Skvortsov, К.Popov, M.Hrossu, T.Lyashchenko, M.Oksiyuk, S.Yepiphanovych, M.Fetisov. Medieval Greek theological practical work was expansively explored in Academy by О.Dmytriyevskyi, and in a little while by his student M.Palmov. In this direction also worked М.Skaballanovych. Except for researches on liturgy the study of artistic monuments of Byzantine culture was carried out in KTA and is represented, above all things, in the works of M.Petrov. Works on Byzantium church law were written by P.Lashkaryov.

Dissertations of Academy students also have historiographical value. Most frequently all the pupils of the institution concentrated on Byzantine study in the context of church history, patrology, liturgy. Exactly from dissertations on this subject began their scientific career outstanding bizantinists – V.Barvinok, K.Kekelidze, S.Ternovskyi et al.

Thus, in Kyiv Theological Academy in ХІХ – at the beginning of the ХХ century was a powerful Byzantine study group with a theological objective.

Key words: Byzantine study, historiography, historical-theological sciences, theological education, Kyiv Theological Academy.
